Bolton Landing Area Guide

Sitting on the shores of Lake George is picturesque Bolton Landing, a refuge for residents and visitors from the hectic day to day business of life and work. Since it was founded in 1799, this small Adirondack community has been a magnet for world weary artists, musicians, and writers and every day people. Generations of families have enjoyed the pure crystalline waters of the town, along with lush, beautiful tree lined paths to mountains that will reward you with a spectacular view after your hike.

Lake George is 32 miles of beautiful beaches, a lake with no navigable inlets or outlets, its spring and brook fed water containing around 200 islands, seventeen of which are personally owned, the rest being owned by New York State. Used for recreational camping and picnicking with more than half of Lake George’s shoreline and islands falling with the boundaries of Bolton, there’s plenty of room to have fun!

Kick back and relax on the front porch of your home and listen to the sounds of the world around you as you sip iced tea in the summer or hot chocolate in the cool evenings of the fall. This resort community enjoys the laid back atmosphere we all seek after a hard day at the office.

When you finish your drink there are activities like steamship cruises, hot air ballooning, amusement parks, riding, and so much more! There’s no end to the things Bolton Landing has to offer, so pack up that suitcase and come for a visit. Once you get here, you’ll be wondering why you didn’t get here sooner!

History
During the 1700’s the French and English explorers began claiming territory throughout northeastern American, the result being the French and Indian War of 1754-1763.
After the war years, retired soldiers were awarded land grants as a reward for their military service and Bolton’s first industries were established as survival methods. Saw and grain mills were built alongside the five main brooks where power could be easily harnessed.

Bolton became a ‘summer visitor’ town as early as the 1800’s, once the trees were cleared and the early farm families began settling into their routine. The summer visitors were usually hunters, fishermen and explorers who most often camped out, although sometimes settlers would always welcome a guest to their homes.
In 1799, Bolton was a wild land, waiting to be explored and settled and while the settlers who came didn’t have a plan to follow, they knew that they had find a location where moving water could be harnessed for power. They did so, clearing the forest for lumber and homes, clearing the land to plant and grow crops and hunt and fish for game.

Today, Bolton is a town built for getaway from the busy work a day world, with shoreline properties almost completely occupied and developed, with residents and summer visitors enjoying Bolton’s view. To learn more, visit: http://www.boltonchamber.com/bolton-landing-history.asp
