Glen Falls Area Guide

If you’re looking for charming historical areas, comfortable, tree lined residential neighborhoods and good shopping, Glens Falls is for you! First settled by Abraham Wing and originally named Wing’s Falls, the name was changed to Glens Falls when Colonel Johannes Glen collected on a debt from Wing and won the right to give the town his name. Steeped in history, the surrounding landscape is dotted with historical markers commemorating important events in American history.

Nicknamed “Hometown, USA” Glens Falls 14,000+ residents will welcome you and show you around their city. Near the Catskills, surrounded by arts, music and educational resources, Glens Falls is a close knit community, welcoming newcomers the same way they welcome people who’ve lived there their entire lives.

Come visit and find out why so many of Glens Falls’ residents wouldn’t want to live anywhere else!

History
A halfway point between Fort Edward and Fort William Henry, the falls were the site of several battles during the Revolutionary and French Indian War. Originally called Chepontuc (Iroquois for ‘difficult place to get around’) it was renamed The Corners by settlers finally founding a town on Glen’s Falls. A post office was established in 18808 and it became incorporated in 1839, expanding the village to what would become the city limits when the city charter was granted by the state legislature in 1908.
